BIBLE PASSAGE: Proverbs 19:11 (ESV) Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.
The very first funeral I should have done was for a brother pastor who had gone home to His Lord after a short-term illness. As he had been close friends with the Circuit Counselor, his widow asked that the Counselor do the funeral, and I assist. Since the Circuit Counselor was the Pastor to the Pastor, it was right that he did so.
Sadly, the Pastor’s widow passed away a year later.
Once again the family went back to the Circuit Counselor. This time they asked him to do their Mother’s funeral. To them that was far better than having the service conducted by the young preacher (me) who was in “their father’s pulpit.” To that request, the Circuit Counselor replied, “Pastor Klaus is your Mother’s Pastor. He will do her funeral.”
Months later I stopped back and thanked him for not undermining my ministry.
In reply, he told me something I have never forgotten. He said, “Ken, the Lord hasn’t given me as many gifts as He has bestowed upon some of the brethren. On the other hand, I do believe He has given me a finely-honed sense of ethics.”
Back then I thought having a “finely honed sense of ethics” was a good thing. Although not listed in Scriptures one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, such a sense of right-and -wrong can make a tremendous difference to the church.
Today I still pray for that gift…and applaud those who have it… including that Circuit Counselor who, many years ago, became President of the South Dakota District and led them wisely and well using his special gift from God, a finely-honed sense of ethics.
