TITLE: Power To Stop The Waves
DATE: May 13, 2019
TEXT: Mark 4:39-40 - ESV - 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?”
Consistency, continuity, commitment.
These things sinners have in pretty short supply. If you doubt me look at the way the crowds welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem on Sunday. It was quite spectacular.
But you also need to take a look at and remember how, just a few days later the crowds intimidated Jesus’ judge by demanding that He be crucified.
Crowds can be fickle like that. Their opinions flip like pancakes. It certainly wasn’t the first time Jesus experienced an almost instantaneous change from those around Him.
To show the limitations of his power, Canute had his throne taken to the seashore.
With a stern voice, he commanded the tide not to come in. You won’t be surprised to hear, in spite of the kingly decree, the waves continued to come crashing in anyway.
The score was God 1 – King 0.
In my readings, I am convinced that there has been only one Person, in all of history, who has had the ability to command wind and wave. That person is the Lord Jesus., He had the power and the wisdom to act… and if it was important to His mission… to not act.
Jesus Christ is our Redeemer.
This was the all-important work He had been assigned. All He did; all He didn’t do was designed, first, foremost and always to complete His Father's plan of salvation.
THE PRAYER: Dear Father, I thank you for Your Son's sacrifice. To believe in a Redeemer who holds the power to stop wind and wave and, at the same time, set aside that power to save us is… well, it is almost unbelievable. Lord, help all the world believe in this wonderful Savior. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
