The Best Money Can’t Buy

TITLE: The Best Money Can’t Buy
DATE: April 3, 2019
TEXT : John 10:10 – ESV –10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Jesus said He had come to die so that I might have a full life. It is a gift which nobody else can bestow.

In World War I, a young man was dying on the battlefield. To provide some comfort, another soldier stopped, moistened the lips of his wounded comrade and made the bloodied head rest easier.

The dying man said, "My father is a man of wealth in Detroit. If I have the strength, I will write him a note. He will repay you for this kindness." This is what he wrote: "Dear father, the bearer of this letter made my last moments easier, and helped me to die. Help him for Charlie's sake."

After the war, the battlefield Samaritan, finding no other possibilities, went to the father Because of his hobo-like appearance, he was denied admission to the great house. Finally, the soldier was able to hand over the little soiled piece of paper, with the words, "I have a note that will interest you." When the father saw the handwriting of his son, all was changed. Charlie's name had given the soldier a good life. He put at the veteran's disposal everything money could buy

  • There are, of course, noticeable contrasts between the actions of an earthly father and that of the Heavenly Father.
  • For example, no earthly father would knowingly send his son into a battle where he knew that boy would die.
  • No earthly father would allow his son to be killed so that someone else, especially an ungrateful someone else, might have an abundant life.

Yet, that is exactly what God did for us.

Into a world which had repeatedly rejected both prophet and priest, every word and warning, God sent His Son. To people who could not be bothered to applaud or appreciate the sacrifice which took place before their eyes, God sent Jesus.

The Lamb of God took our place, shouldered our sins, and carried the punishment that we had deserved. Because of His sacrificial death on Calvary's cross, a now-living Lord says, 'I need not worry or be afraid. My present and future are taken care of.'

He has given us that which money cannot buy. Because He has given everything, the Savior says to us, 'I have come so you might have life and have it to the full.'

THE PRAYER: Dear Jesus, You have given me a full life even though I don't deserve it, and often don't appreciate it. Fill my heart with gratitude for this life which is what Your blood has bought. In Your Name. Amen.

The music which introduces and concludes our devotions was written by Guy Baumann. He along three of his brothers perform on the album: The Baumann Brothers which may be ordered here: http://thebaumannbrothers.com/index.html
