TITLE: Thy Will
DATE: September 10, 2019 TEXT:. Proverbs 3:5-6 – ESV - 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. When we lived in South Dakota I often drove from Hot Springs up to Custer and Hill City. The fastest route was through Wind Cave. Prairie dogs, deer antelope, fox, coyote and bison were there in abundance. Truthfully speaking, it was not the wildlife which was the most interesting thing to see on that trip. If you wanted to see fascinating things, don’t look to the wildlife, look to the Park visitors. I have seen a fellow with a freshly waxed black VW Beetle. He dove up and stopped right next to the bison herd... during mating season. One of those old bulls, took a look, thought his reflection was competition for the ladies and he demolished that VW, Then there was the fellow who walked through the Prairie Dog village with his four-year-old daughter. He was concentrating so hard on his objective, he couldn’t hear shouts of warning from the peanut gallery. “And what was his objective?”,I hear you ask. Well, he wanted to put his little girl on the back of the bison so he could take a picture and preserve the memory of their trip. He was almost as bad as the tourist who recently visited Yellowstone National Park. When he and his family left the Park, he filled out an official suggestion sheet. This is what he wrote: “Our trip was wonderful, but we never saw any bears. Please train your bears to be where guests can see them. This was an expensive trip to not to get to see bears. I imagine the first time somebody in the National Park Service read that note he said:
I believe the Lord must sometimes feel that way about the longings of our hearts. When the lottery reaches the hundreds-of-millions-of-dollars mark, how many prayers to supply the right number can the Lord give? Or whose prayer should he listen to... the farmer who needs rain on his field, or the vacationer who is looking for some sunny weather as he’s trying to be restored. How can He favorably answer all the students who apply to the prestigious Ivy League College? How can He look favorably upon the requests of those who want Mrs. Clinton to become President and those who want Mr. Trump to be the Chief Executive? Now all this is not to tell people to stop praying. Jesus told us to ask the Father and pray in His Name.... No, the Lord wants to hear Your prayer but He wants one more thing from us. He wants to hear those words: “Thy will be done” In the final analysis, when everything else has been said, and when we have finished pouring out our hearts, the Lord wants us to leave the final decision to Him. It’s what Jesus did in the Garden of Gethsemane; it is what we need to do too. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I come to You because of Jesus; I speak because You have encouraged it; I pray Your will be done, because You, not I should be in control. In Jesus’ Name. Amen. The devotion for today was inspired by various recent news articles.
